Episode #41: Italy Cruise Ports with Kids: Rome, Pompeii, Pisa, Cagliari & Our Best Family Travel Tips
Italy Cruise Ports with Kids: Our Honest Review of Cagliari, Naples, Rome & Pisa on a Mediterranean Cruise
Italy has a way of capturing your heart.
From ancient ruins and world-famous landmarks to fresh pizza, creamy gelato, and breathtaking coastlines, every port offers something completely different. During our 7-night Disney Dream Mediterranean cruise, our family of seven explored four incredible Italian ports in four consecutive days: Cagliari, Naples, Rome, and Pisa.
Each destination taught us something new about cruising with kids. Some excursions exceeded our expectations. Others reminded us that choosing the right tour can completely change your experience.
In this episode, I'm sharing exactly what we did, what I'd do differently, and practical tips to help you plan your own Mediterranean cruise with kids.
(And don't worry... Rome deserves its own episode! Next week I'll share a complete guide to visiting Rome with kids.)
In This Episode
• Our honest review of all four Italian cruise ports
• Which excursions were worth it (and which weren't)
• What we'd change if we visited again
• Family travel tips for staying cool during an Italian summer
• Why excursion choice matters more than you think
• How Disney Cruise Line made excursion days incredibly easy
• The surprising lesson we learned after accidentally leaving our stroller at home
Before You Book Your Excursions...
One of the biggest takeaways from this cruise was that choosing the right excursion matters just as much as choosing the right cruise.
Before booking, ask yourself:
• Is it stroller friendly?
• How much walking is involved?
• Will there be shade?
• How long is the transportation?
• Will my kids actually enjoy this?
• Is it worth the price?
These questions can make the difference between an amazing family day and one where everyone is counting the minutes until it's over.
One thing Disney Cruise Line does exceptionally well is excursion logistics. Meeting your guide onboard, following Cast Members directly to transportation, and having everything organized removed so much stress from our day.
While third-party excursions are often less expensive, booking directly through the cruise line gave us extra peace of mind, especially with five kids.
Port 1: Cagliari, Sardinia
This beautiful island was our first stop in Italy.
Before this cruise, I honestly knew very little about Cagliari. We chose a sightseeing bus excursion because it was one of the more affordable options available.
Unfortunately, it ended up being our least favorite excursion of the trip.
The scenery was beautiful.
The city itself was charming.
But spending long stretches sitting on a bus listening to historical commentary just wasn't engaging for our kids.
We stopped at a few viewpoints, did a little shopping, and walked around town briefly, but the excursion simply wasn't interactive enough for our family.
What I'd Do Instead
If I returned to Cagliari, I'd choose something much more active, such as:
• A beach excursion
• A boat tour along the coastline
• Exploring the Castello district
• Spending more time wandering the city
• Eating plenty of gelato
Lesson learned: not every sightseeing tour is a good fit for kids.
Port 2: Naples & Pompeii
Naples quickly became one of our favorite days of the cruise.
Originally, I almost booked a 10-hour excursion that included both Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.
I'm so glad I didn't.
Knowing Rome would be another long day immediately afterward, we intentionally paced ourselves and chose to focus only on Pompeii.
It turned out to be the perfect decision.
Visiting Pompeii with Kids
Pompeii completely exceeded our expectations.
Walking through a city frozen in time nearly 2,000 years ago is something that's hard to fully appreciate until you're standing there.
Our guide did an incredible job bringing history to life while showing us:
• Ancient homes
• Original ovens
• Preserved streets
• Public buildings
• The famous plaster casts created from victims of the eruption
Some of the exhibits can be emotional for children, so we prepared our kids ahead of time by watching educational YouTube videos explaining the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Despite the summer heat, our kids genuinely enjoyed exploring the ruins.
Our Favorite Surprise in Naples
After returning from Pompeii, we realized we still had several hours before needing to re-board the ship.
Since we'd packed swimsuits "just in case," we hired a local taxi van to take our family to Bikini Beach.
It ended up becoming one of everyone's favorite memories from the entire cruise.
We spent the afternoon:
• Swimming in the Mediterranean
• Collecting tiny seashells
• Eating Italian ice cream
• Relaxing on the beach
• Letting the kids simply play
Sometimes the simplest moments become the ones your family remembers most.
Port 3: Rome
Rome deserves an episode all by itself.
This was my third visit to Rome, but my first time experiencing it with kids.
Between the 90-minute drive each way from the cruise port, the crowds, the summer heat, and the incredible amount there is to see, there simply wasn't enough time to cover everything in one episode.
During our day we visited:
• The Colosseum
• Trevi Fountain
• Spanish Steps
• Forum of Augustus
• Basilica di Santa Maria
• Palatine Hill
• Countless gelato shops
• Plenty of pasta restaurants
One unforgettable parenting moment happened outside the Colosseum when our four-year-old completely hit her limit.
She sat down on the cobblestones and cried.
She was hot.
She was exhausted.
She was simply done.
Thankfully, a kind traveler nearby offered us an electric fan while we cooled her down with water, snacks, and cooling towels.
Traveling with kids isn't always picture-perfect.
Sometimes the meltdowns become part of the story too.
Next week's episode is dedicated entirely to visiting Rome with kids, including everything I'd do differently and my best planning tips.
Port 4: Pisa
Our final Italian port was Livorno, where most cruise passengers choose between Florence or Pisa.
Since my husband and I had already visited Florence years ago, we decided Pisa would be a fun new experience for the kids.
It was the perfect choice.
Highlights included:
• Touring Pisa Cathedral
• Visiting the Baptistry
• Listening to an incredible live acoustic singing demonstration
• Taking all the classic Leaning Tower photos
• Eating pizza in front of the Leaning Tower
• Enjoying even more gelato
One of my son's biggest goals for the trip was eating authentic Italian pizza while standing in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Mission accomplished.
Although we skipped climbing the tower, none of us regretted it. With younger kids and limited port time, simply enjoying the grounds and making memories together was more than enough.
The Stroller Mistake That Turned Into a Win
One of the biggest surprises of our three-week Europe trip happened before we even boarded the plane.
We accidentally left our travel stroller at home.
At first, I thought it would completely ruin our trip.
Instead, it ended up simplifying it.
Without a stroller, we avoided:
• Carrying it up endless stairs
• Folding and unfolding for transportation
• Fighting cobblestone streets
• Maneuvering through crowds
Yes, there were more piggyback rides.
Yes, we carried tired kids more often.
But there was also so much more freedom.
If your child can comfortably walk most of the day, you may be surprised how enjoyable Europe can be without a stroller.
Without the stroller there was a lot of holding and piggy back rides for my 4 year old but not having the stroller simplified a lot!
Final Thoughts on Italy
Each Italian port offered something completely different.
Cagliari reminded me how important it is to choose kid-friendly excursions.
Naples amazed us with history and unexpected beach time.
Rome left us exhausted but completely inspired.
Pisa delivered exactly the fun, iconic experience we hoped for.
Most importantly, this trip reminded me that kids rarely remember the heat, the long walks, or the tired moments.
They remember:
• Eating pizza in Italy.
• Swimming in the Mediterranean.
• Standing inside the Colosseum.
• Holding up the Leaning Tower.
• Endless scoops of gelato.
Those are the memories that last.
And that's exactly why we keep traveling.
