How to Prepare for Traveling with Toddlers and Kids: 5 Sanity-Saving Tips
Traveling with toddlers and young kids can feel overwhelming — as a traveling mom of 5, I know, I’ve been there. From packing all the things, to managing naps, snacks, and inevitable meltdowns, it can feel like more stress than it’s worth. But with the right preparation, family travel can actually become smoother, easier, and way more fun. We love traveling with our 5 kids (ages 4-12) and making lifelong memories with them, but it hasn’t always been easy.
Here are my five best tips to help you prepare for traveling with toddlers and kids so you can enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
1. Pack Smart (and Light)
It’s tempting to bring everything “just in case,” but overpacking usually creates more stress. Instead, pack only what you know you’ll use and organize items in categories: one bag for snacks, one for toys/activities, and one for essentials (diapers, wipes, meds). Packing cubes or zip pouches make this so much easier. While I try to pack well, I do try my best not to overpack and remind myself that if we really do need something, there are stores where we’re going. Bonus tip: pack a change of clothes for you as well as your kids in your carry-on — trust me, you’ll thank yourself later. And on this note, I highly recommend packing carry on only if possible so you don’t have to stress about losing luggage and it also forces you to pack lighter.
2. Build in Extra Time
Everything takes longer with kids — security lines, bathroom breaks, boarding, even just getting out the door. Give yourself extra time for each step of the travel day so you’re not rushing and adding unnecessary stress. If you arrive early, let your kids stretch their legs before being confined on the plane or in the car. I like to find an empty gate near where ours is and let my kids play and relax. As long as they aren’t bothering other passengers, I love seeing them play tag and burning some energy before we board.
3. Prep Snacks Like a Pro
Hungry kids = cranky kids. Bring a variety of snacks in small portions, and pull them out one at a time as the trip goes on. Think easy, mess-free options like crackers, fruit pouches, cheese sticks, or trail mix (for older kids). Something I love to do is bring new or “special” snacks they don’t usually get so it feels like a treat and provides some excitement for them. I also bring gum, fruit snacks and/or flat lollipops to help kids during take off and landing - they come in handy to help prevent ear pain for kids.
4. Download Wi-Fi Free Apps Ahead of Time
There’s nothing worse than boarding a plane or hitting a long stretch of road only to realize your child’s favorite app needs Wi-Fi. Do yourself a favor and download offline apps ahead of time.
From fun educational games for toddlers, to creative apps for tweens and calming puzzles for older kids, having a stash of no-WiFi apps ready to go can save your sanity on travel days. We’ve actually tested well over 50 different apps to find the best no-WiFi apps that actually keep my kids entertained and happy.

5. Set Realistic Expectations
The truth is, even with the best planning, kids will have meltdowns, flights will be delayed, and plans will change. Instead of aiming for a “perfect” trip, aim for a memorable one. Build in downtime, don’t over schedule, and give yourself grace. Some of the best family memories come from the in-between moments, not the picture-perfect ones. I try to celebrate the little wins like an on-time flight, kids that did well for the majority of the flight, or going a few hours without kids fighting (just kidding, but not really!) :-)
Final Thoughts
Preparing to travel with toddlers and kids doesn’t have to be stressful. By packing smart, leaving extra time, prepping snacks, downloading offline apps, and keeping expectations realistic, you’ll set your family up for smoother, happier adventures.
Remember — family travel isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection. With the right tools, your trips can be less about chaos and more about the memories that last a lifetime.
