Family Trip or Family Vacation? The Mindset Shifts That Make All the Difference
When you’re traveling with young kids, it’s easy to imagine a picture-perfect vacation — calm days by the pool, no responsibilities, and endless relaxation. But let’s be real: when you add toddlers or little ones into the mix, it’s not exactly lounging with a book and a piña colada. I learned a long time ago that we do not go on family vacations with our 5 kids, we go on family trips. Family trips are awesome and memorable but there is very little ‘vacationing’ going on for my husband and I.
And that’s okay. Because while it may not feel like a “vacation” in the traditional sense, it is a family trip — and with the right mindset, it can be even more rewarding.
Why Mindset Matters in Family Travel
Shifting your expectations before you even leave home is one of the most powerful ways to enjoy your trip. When you stop striving for perfect schedules, flawless behavior, and Instagram-worthy moments, you leave space for what family travel is really about: connection, adventure, and memories.
Instead of focusing on what could go wrong, remind yourself: this trip isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence.
The Benefits of Traveling with Kids
Even with the meltdowns and missed naps, traveling with kids offers so much:
Shared experiences that strengthen family bonds
Exposure to new places and cultures that helps kids learn and grow
Memories you’ll laugh about later (yes, even the messy ones!)
Moments of joy you wouldn’t trade for anything
These trips aren’t just about the destination — they’re about building the stories your family will tell for years to come.
5 Mindset Shifts for Smoother Family Trips
Here are a few of my favorite sanity-saving mindset shifts (straight from my FREE guide: 101 Sanity-Saving Tips for Traveling with Kids).
1. Lower the Bar (in the Best Way)
Stop aiming for “perfect.” Kids will be kids — and that means tantrums, spills, and detours. Expecting a little chaos makes it easier to roll with the punches.
2. Build in Flex Time
Don’t overschedule. Instead of trying to squeeze in five activities a day, pick one or two highlights and allow time for naps, snacks, and unplanned fun.
3. Embrace Entertainment as a Tool
Keeping kids occupied is not “cheating.” Pack small toys, snacks, coloring activities, or download Wi-Fi–free apps ahead of time so you’re not relying on in-flight Wi-Fi (which rarely works!).

4. Focus on Connection, Not Control
When things go off track, ask yourself: Is this worth stressing over, or is this a memory in the making? Your kids won’t remember the schedule — they’ll remember the fun.
5. Travel Light(er)
You don’t need to pack everything. Streamline your packing with a checklist and bring only what truly makes travel easier. (Yes, snacks count as essentials!)
6. Celebrate the Small Wins
Made it through security without a meltdown? That’s a win. Everyone shared snacks without fighting? Another win. Noticing these moments keeps spirits high. You could even play a little game with your kids where they earn $1 for every time they do sometime extra helpful or make it though a car ride without figting with a sibling. We do this in our family and my kids love earning extra money for souvenirs and I love rewarding good behavior to make everyone’s day go easier.
7. Remember the Big Picture
At the end of the day, you’re giving your kids the gift of shared experiences, time together, and a bigger view of the world. That matters more than whether every detail goes smoothly.
Final Thoughts
Family travel may not feel like the “vacations” you used to take before kids — but with the right mindset, it can be even better. When you let go of perfection and embrace the chaos as part of the adventure, you’ll create lasting memories you’ll cherish forever.
